Patacones Recipe

Patacones, also known as tostones in some Latin American countries, are twice-fried green plantains that are smashed, fried again, and served with a variety of mouthwatering toppings.

Ingredients:

  • 2 green plantains, peeled and sliced into 1-inch thick rounds
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Salt, to taste
  • Toppings of your choice (guacamole, shredded beef, black beans, cheese, salsa, etc.)

Instructions:

  1. Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the plantain rounds to the hot oil and fry for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are golden brown and slightly softened.
  3. Remove the fried plantain rounds from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  4. Using a tostonera (plantain press) or the bottom of a heavy glass, flatten each fried plantain round into a disk.
  5. Return the flattened plantains to the hot oil and fry for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until they are crispy and golden brown.
  6. Remove the fried plantains from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  7. Sprinkle the hot Patacones with salt to taste.
  8. Serve the Patacones hot with your choice of toppings, such as guacamole, shredded beef, black beans, cheese, salsa, or any other desired toppings.
  9. Enjoy the crispy and flavorful goodness of homemade Patacones, inspired by the vibrant street food culture of Venezuela!
