Beef Rouladen Recipe
Beef Rouladen—a dish that marries tender beef rolls with a symphony of flavors. Picture thinly sliced beef, generously filled with a medley of bacon, onions, and pickles, all secured with toothpicks and slow-cooked to perfection.
Ingredients:
- 4 beef slices (top round or sirloin), thinly cut
- 4 slices bacon
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 4 dill pickles, sliced into strips
- Dijon mustard for spreading
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Vegetable oil for browning
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup red wine (optional)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions:
- Prepare Beef Slices:
- Lay out the beef slices and pat them dry. Season each slice with salt and black pepper.
- Layer with Ingredients:
- Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on each beef slice. Place a slice of bacon, chopped onions, and pickle strips on top.
- Roll and Secure:
- Roll up each beef slice, securing the filling with toothpicks or kitchen twine.
- Brown the Rolls:
- In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Brown the beef rolls on all sides, creating a flavorful crust.
- Deglaze with Liquid:
- If using red wine, pour it into the skillet to deglaze, scraping up any browned bits. Add beef broth to the skillet.
- Simmer to Perfection:
- Lower the heat, cover the skillet, and let the Beef Rouladen simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, allowing the flavors to meld and the beef to become tender.
- Thicken the Sauce:
- In a separate bowl, mix flour with a bit of water to create a smooth paste. Stir the paste into the skillet to thicken the sauce.
- Garnish and Serve:
- Remove toothpicks, garnish with fresh parsley, and serve the Beef Rouladen with the rich, flavorful sauce.
