Cherry Streusel Bars with Buttery Crust

  • 1 cup fresh or frozen tart cherries, pitted
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup chopped almonds or walnuts (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
