South African Bobotie Recipe
Bobotie is a traditional South African dish that combines the flavors of sweet and savory in a mouthwatering way. Made with ground beef, spices, and a creamy custard topping, this dish is sure to impress anyone who tries it. While it may seem complicated, it’s actually quite simple to make and is perfect for a special occasion or family dinner.
Ingredients:
- 2 slices of bread
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon curry powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 2 tablespoons apricot jam
- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup raisins
- 2 eggs
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Soak the bread in the milk for about 5 minutes, then mash it into a paste.
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Add the curry powder, cinnamon, coriander, cumin, and turmeric to the skillet and stir well to combine.
- Add the apricot jam, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, raisins, and bread paste to the skillet and mix well.
- Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.
- Beat the eggs and pour them over the top of the mixture in the baking dish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the custard topping is golden brown and set.
- Serve hot with yellow rice and a side of chutney.
