Greek Spanakopita Recipe with a Flaky Filo Crust

Greek cuisine is renowned for its fresh and delicious ingredients, bold flavors, and unique dishes. One of the most popular and beloved dishes in Greece is spanakopita, a savory pastry made with spinach and feta cheese wrapped in a flaky filo crust. This traditional Greek dish is perfect for entertaining, as a light lunch or dinner, or as a delicious snack.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound fresh spinach, washed and chopped
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup fresh dill, chopped
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled
  • 4 eggs, lightly beaten
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 pound filo pastry sheets

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and sauté until softened.
  3. Add the spinach and cook until wilted.
  4. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  5. Add the dill, parsley, feta cheese, eggs, salt, and pepper, and mix well.
  6. Grease a baking dish with olive oil and lay 5-6 filo sheets on top, brushing each with olive oil.
  7. Add the spinach mixture to the dish and spread it evenly.
  8. Cover with 5-6 more filo sheets, brushing each with olive oil.
  9. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
